Growing up in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Paula’s family roots span both European and Indigenous backgrounds. Her late grandmother, Elizabeth Giroux, worked as a community health representative in Fort Resolution, Northwest Territories. Inspired by her grandmother’s dedication, Paula pursued nursing, embarking on a path that would lead her to advocate for Indigenous health.
Education and Expertise
After graduating from the University of Alberta in 2005, Paula began her registered nursing career with Health Canada, serving First Nations communities in the Edmonton area. Her experiences with Indigenous populations fueled her passion for addressing their unique needs and challenges. Determined to make a broader impact, Paula pursued a master’s degree in nursing, specializing as a Nurse Practitioner. In 2023, she obtained her master’s degree from the University of Saskatchewan and began providing primary care services in the Rocky Mountain House area.
Beyond Healthcare: Modeling and Empowerment
Paula’s journey extends beyond healthcare. In her youth, she ventured into modeling—a means of personal growth and empowerment. Modeling allowed her to step out of her shell, gain confidence, and connect with fellow Indigenous artists and models. Paula graced the pages of local fashion publications in Alberta, featured in the Edmonton Journal and making television appearances during Western Canada Fashion Week. Her unique blend of nursing expertise and modeling prowess sets her apart.
Empowering Others: Cosmetic Injections and Self-Care
Paula’s interest in the beauty and fashion sector led her to obtain certification in cosmetic injections in 2019. This rare combination—being an Indigenous nurse with a master’s degree—allows her to offer services that focus on empowering others. The cosmetic injection industry has become mainstream, emphasizing self-care and aging gracefully. Paula’s commitment to holistic well-being extends beyond traditional healthcare settings.
