The city’s innovative food safety program now features green placards displayed in restaurants that have passed rigorous health department checks. These placards signify quality and adherence to safety standards, giving patrons confidence in their dining choices.
The new “Dining with Confidence” initiative aims to elevate food safety and transparency. Restaurants that meet inspection criteria receive a green placard, while those needing improvement display a red placard until they pass re-inspection. The program officially launches on October 1, but early adopters are already volunteering to participate.
The Jolly Pumpkin Shines
Among the program’s stars is The Jolly Pumpkin Pizzeria and Brewery. Inspectors praised their commitment to proper food handling, hygiene, and temperature control. Jason Vandereyk, the general manager, expressed pride in their green placard. “Our customers deserve quality,” he emphasized.

City Councilman Scott Benson championed the program, emphasizing its dual benefits. Not only does it empower diners to make informed choices, but it also reduces foodborne illnesses. With 250 restaurants already on board, Detroit is prioritizing public health and ensuring residents can dine with confidence.
