The California Academy of Sciences has officially kicked off its annual “‘Tis the Season for Science” program, blending festive cheer with hands-on learning. This year, the museum in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park is celebrating the season with live animal exhibits, dazzling performances, and interactive activities that explore the wonders of winter.
Among the star attractions are two baby reindeer, lounging in their pen just outside the museum’s eastern end. These seven-month-old visitors, recently weaned and sporting insulation perfect for Arctic life, have quickly captured the hearts of visitors. Children watch in awe, pointing and laughing, perhaps wondering if these young reindeer are gearing up for their biggest night of the year—December 24.
Snow, Science, and Spectacle
Inside the museum, the festivities come alive with periodic snowfall in the central presentation space. For kids and adults alike, the falling snowflakes are pure magic. Running, jumping, and trying to catch snow on their tongues, visitors revel in the wintry atmosphere while learning how animals adapt to colder climates.
The museum’s executive director, Scott Sampson, highlights the event’s unique blend of education and entertainment. “Every year, the academy catches the holiday bug with ‘Tis the Season for Science,’ more than a month of wintry festivities with a special academy science twist,” Sampson said.
This year’s lineup includes:
- Live Animal Guests: Reindeer, baby camels arriving on December 6, and baby yaks on December 20.
- Interactive Science Experiments: Think dry ice demonstrations and seasonal experiments.
- Performances: Music, dance, and magic acts from over a dozen troupes.
Learning Through Holiday Cheer
While festive décor and activities set the stage, the program remains deeply rooted in education. Signs near the animal exhibits provide insights into the unique adaptations of reindeer, camels, and yaks. From thick fur to insulation against extreme temperatures, these animals demonstrate resilience in some of the planet’s harshest environments.
The signs also tie these adaptations to pressing issues like climate change. “As climate change alters and reduces habitats, these species—and many others—face new challenges. Humans can help these resilient young animals thrive by protecting and regenerating ecosystems,” one display explains.
Fan Favorites and Old Classics
For those seeking more than holiday cheer, the museum’s permanent exhibits offer year-round intrigue. The Steinhart Aquarium, featuring Claude the albino alligator, remains a crowd favorite. Visitors can also explore the lush, four-story Osher Rainforest, home to 1,600 butterflies, birds, and plants, all within a tropical ecosystem.
Then there’s the Morrison Planetarium, where Tom Hanks narrates a breathtaking journey through the cosmos in “Passport to the Universe.” It’s a must-see experience worth the wait.
