A new high-end train service is revolutionizing cross-border tourism between China and Laos, offering travelers a scenic and immersive journey through history, nature, and culture. The StarExpress train, which connects Kunming, China, with Vientiane, Laos, successfully completed its inaugural voyage last month, ushering in a new era of tourism exchanges under the Belt and Road Initiative.
StarExpress: Connecting Cultures and Destinations
The StarExpress train, developed by CTG Asset, a subsidiary of the Hong Kong-based China Tourism Group, aims to promote tourism collaboration between the two countries. Departing from Kunming, the train crosses the Tropic of Cancer, takes passengers through the UNESCO World Heritage city of Luang Prabang, and arrives in Vientiane, the capital of Laos.
The inaugural journey, spanning three nights and four days, allowed passengers to experience Laos’s natural beauty and cultural diversity firsthand. They explored landmarks such as the French colonial architecture of Vientiane and the sacred Buddhist temples of Luang Prabang, savoring the relaxed riverside atmosphere along the way.
Laotian guide Geng Vang, who led a group of Chinese travelers on the trip, shared his excitement:
“It was a half-day trip, so I tried to cram in as much detailed information as possible about those scenic spots,” Vang explained.
Travelers toured the Royal Palace Museum, which dates back to 1904 and served as the residence of King Sisavang Vong. They also enjoyed panoramic views of Luang Prabang from Mount Phousi and ended their journey at a bustling night market, browsing local crafts and delicacies.
A New Era of Cross-Border Train Travel
For many of the passengers, including Liu Yaling from Beijing Yumei International Travel Agency, this trip was their first visit to Laos. Liu was drawn to the journey by the combination of cross-border adventure and luxury amenities on the StarExpress:
“The rich amenities and services on the train are alluring, and it also offers cross-border experiences,” Liu said.
Designed with both comfort and sustainability in mind, the train features soundproofing technology, an integrated smart information system, and eco-friendly operations. Travelers enjoyed onboard entertainment like on-demand movies, interactive games, and cultural activities, including tea ceremonies and ethnic dance performances.
Liu particularly appreciated the butler service and personalized catering options, which made the trip feel relaxing and luxurious:
“I feel the crew really put their heart into it,” she remarked.
Boosting Regional Tourism and Economic Collaboration
The launch of the StarExpress is part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, promoting not only tourism but also deeper cultural and economic ties between China and Laos. The new train service offers a seamless connection for travelers, providing a sustainable alternative to air travel while showcasing the natural and cultural treasures of both countries.
The route is expected to drive tourism revenue in Laos, particularly in regional hubs like Luang Prabang, and attract more international travelers. By opening up lesser-known areas to tourists, the train also supports regional economies, with local markets and artisans benefiting from increased visitor numbers.
