CROSSROADS Maldives, the first multi-island destination in the Maldives, has announced its commitment to implement a global sustainable tourism scheme as part of its corporate social responsibility goals. The destination, which opened in 2023, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Maldives’ Ministry of Climate Change, Environment & Energy to preserve the natural environment and support the rich marine biodiversity of the area.
The destination’s motto, “Building Big, Protecting Small”, reflects its vision to create a world-class integrated resort that also respects and protects the small island nation’s fragile ecosystem. The destination covers an area of 3.15km², of which 31% is designated as an Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs) programme. This means that the destination will work with the ministry and other stakeholders to monitor and conserve the marine life and coral reefs in the area.
The destination also follows the Green Globe standards, which cover four key areas: sustainable management, social and economic development, environmental practices, and cultural heritage. The destination has a team of in-house marine biologists and sustainability experts who oversee the implementation of various initiatives and practices to reduce the environmental impact and enhance the social benefits of the destination.
Educating and Empowering the Local Community
One of the main objectives of the destination is to educate and empower the local community, especially the young generation, about the importance of sustainable tourism and the opportunities in the industry. The destination organises monthly field trips for local schools, where students can visit different departments and learn about the operations behind a tourism destination. The destination also visits local schools to engage with students and improve school facilities.
Another initiative that the destination has launched is the Street Market, which takes place every month at its retail area, The Marina@CROSSROADS. The Street Market allows local enterprises, individuals, and start-ups to showcase and promote their products and services to the visitors and guests of the destination. The Street Market also features local artists and performers who create a lively atmosphere for the event. The destination serves as a resourceful platform for the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to expand their business and network.
Inspiring Inclusion and Diversity
The destination also celebrates and promotes the inclusion and diversity of the Maldives and its people. The destination features a Maldives Discovery Centre and a Marine Discovery Centre, where visitors can learn more about the history, culture, and nature of the Maldives through interactive and immersive experiences. The destination also hosts various events and activities that showcase the Maldivian heritage and traditions, such as music, dance, art, and cuisine.
The destination also supports the global movement for gender equality and women’s empowerment, which is the theme of the International Women’s Day 2024: Inspire Inclusion. The destination recognises and honours the women who are making a difference in the society and the industry, and inspires others to follow their footsteps.
