International travel experts from around the globe gathered in Suzhou to experience the city’s unique cultural and tourism attractions. After attending the China International Travel Mart 2024 in Shanghai, these agents got to explore the heart of Suzhou’s traditions and beauty.
Experiencing ‘The Interrupted Dream’ in Suzhou
The Suzhou municipal bureau of culture, radio, television, and tourism showcased the city’s offerings under the theme “Youyuan Jingmeng”.
“Youyuan Jingmeng”, or “The Interrupted Dream”, is an excerpt from the classic Chinese Kunqu Opera Peony Pavilion. In this tale, the heroine Du Liniang dreams in a garden, sparking a romantic adventure.
Suzhou is famous for its ancient gardens, like the renowned Humble Administrator’s Garden. Visitors were absolutely captivated by the city’s blend of history and natural beauty.
It’s no wonder people call Suzhou the “Venice of the East”.
A Showcase of Intangible Cultural Heritage
The event hosted 30 overseas travel agents from six Gulf countries and Russia, 24 young Sinologists from 21 countries, and 30 local reps from Suzhou’s travel agencies, online platforms, scenic spots, and hotels.
They were treated to exhibitions of intangible cultural heritage works by masters Wu Wenkang and Chen Qiaosheng, who made it to the 2023 Forbes China Top 100 Outstanding Craftspeople.
Highlights of the exhibition included:
- Intricate silk embroidery
- Traditional wood carving
- Masterpieces by Wu Wenkang and Chen Qiaosheng
Attendees were blown away by the craftsmanship and artistry on display.
“Honestly, it’s amazing to see such dedication to preserving traditional arts,” one travel agent commented.
Exploring Suzhou’s Iconic Landmarks
During the two-day itinerary, the travel agents visited the Humble Administrator’s Garden, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
They also explored Zhouzhuang water town, often dubbed the “No.1 Water Town in China”.
At a local museum, they discovered the traditional arts and crafts of Suzhou.
Here’s a quick look at the places they visited:
Landmark | Highlights |
---|---|
Humble Administrator’s Garden | Classical garden design, serene landscapes |
Zhouzhuang Water Town | Ancient waterways, traditional houses |
Suzhou Arts and Crafts Museum | Traditional arts, local crafts |
“Walking through the gardens felt like stepping back in time,” said one visitor.
The agents left with a wealth of knowledge and stories to share with their clients back home.
