In a significant milestone, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) achieved a new monthly record by surpassing the 50,000-unit mark for domestic passenger vehicle (PV) wholesales in September 2024. This feat propels the company ahead of competitors like Tata Motors, Toyota, Kia, and Honda, establishing itself as the third-largest original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in terms of sales volumes for the month.
Mahindra’s Record-Breaking Sales Performance
Mahindra sold an impressive 51,062 units in September, a substantial increase compared to Tata Motors, which sold 41,063 units in the same period. Mahindra’s performance also put it just 39 units behind Hyundai Motor India, which posted wholesale sales of 51,101 units for the month.
This milestone represents Mahindra’s first time crossing the 50,000-unit threshold in a single month. The company’s cumulative sales for FY25, covering April to September, now stand at 260,210 units, underscoring its growing presence in the Indian automotive market.
Anand Mahindra’s Response: Mutual Respect for Tata Motors
Despite the competition, Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group, expressed admiration for Tata Motors. In a recent post on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), Mahindra referred to Tata Motors as a “respected elder brother,” responding to a media report highlighting Mahindra’s sales victory.
- Quote from Mahindra: “The only race worth winning is the one you race against yourself; against your OWN aspirations. We have always seen Tata Motors as a respected elder brother that spurs us to keep improving ourselves.”
- Encouraging collaboration: Mahindra emphasized that while competition drives both companies to innovate, they share a mutual journey toward progress and growth.
A Tight Race in the Automotive Industry
Mahindra’s sales surge highlights the intense competition among automakers in India. The company’s flagship models like the XUV700 and Scorpio-N have resonated strongly with customers, contributing to the record-breaking sales numbers.
Meanwhile, Tata Motors, while trailing Mahindra this month, remains a formidable competitor. The company has consistently pushed the envelope with its electric vehicle offerings, adding another layer to the competition between the two automakers.
With Mahindra’s consistent growth and Tata Motors’ leadership in EVs, the automotive race in India promises to stay competitive, pushing both companies to strive for greater innovation and success.
