Pacific Tourism Organisation and Kiribati Unveil Visitor Survey Results

The Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) and the Tourism Authority of Kiribati (TAK) have released the results of their latest visitor survey, providing valuable insights into the behaviors, preferences, and satisfaction levels of international tourists. Conducted from January to June 2024, the survey aimed to understand visitor demographics and motivations, helping shape future tourism strategies. Key findings reveal that business travel remains a primary driver of visitation, while cultural heritage and local hospitality significantly influence tourists’ experiences. The survey’s comprehensive data will guide efforts to enhance Kiribati’s appeal as a tourist destination.

Visitor Demographics and Motivations

The survey results highlight the diverse backgrounds and motivations of visitors to Kiribati. The majority of tourists came from Australia (36%), followed by Fiji (17%) and New Zealand (13%). This demographic trend underscores the strong regional ties and the appeal of Kiribati to neighboring countries. The average age of visitors was between 45 and 54 years, with a significant portion traveling for business purposes.

Business travel accounted for 40% of the visits, reflecting Kiribati’s growing reputation as a hub for professional engagements and development partnerships. Holiday travel made up 18% of the visits, while 11% of tourists were visiting friends or relatives. These statistics indicate a balanced mix of professional and leisure travelers, each contributing to the local economy in different ways.

The survey also revealed that colleagues and workmates were the most influential sources of information about Kiribati. This word-of-mouth promotion highlights the importance of personal recommendations in attracting visitors. The unique culture and history of Kiribati, along with the friendliness of its people, were key factors in tourists’ decision to visit, showcasing the country’s rich cultural heritage as a major draw.

Visitor Experiences and Satisfaction

Tourists’ experiences in Kiribati were generally positive, with high satisfaction ratings for several aspects of their visit. The friendliness and warmth of the I-Kiribati people stood out as a significant highlight, with many visitors praising the exceptional hospitality they received. The airport experience and overall level of service also received high marks, contributing to a favorable impression of the destination.

The average length of stay for visitors was seven nights, with South Tarawa and North Tarawa being the most visited islands. These locations offer a blend of cultural and natural attractions, providing tourists with a well-rounded experience. The survey indicated that the average prepaid expenditure per person ranged between USD 1,000 and USD 1,499, with a substantial portion allocated to international flights. In-country spending was primarily on accommodation, food and beverage, and domestic travel.

Despite the positive feedback, the survey identified areas for improvement. Visitors expressed a desire for a cleaner environment, better accommodations, and enhanced public services and infrastructure. Addressing these concerns will be crucial for maintaining high satisfaction levels and encouraging repeat visits. The willingness of the majority of visitors to return to Kiribati and recommend it to others is a testament to the destination’s potential for growth.

Implications for Future Tourism Strategies

The insights gained from the visitor survey will play a pivotal role in shaping Kiribati’s future tourism strategies. The data provides a clear understanding of what attracts tourists to the country and what areas need improvement. By focusing on enhancing the visitor experience and addressing the identified challenges, Kiribati can strengthen its position in the competitive Pacific tourism market.

The collaboration between SPTO and TAK in conducting the survey demonstrates a commitment to data-driven decision-making. Reeti Onorio, Acting CEO of the Tourism Authority of Kiribati, emphasized the importance of these findings in guiding future policies and initiatives. The survey’s results will inform efforts to promote sustainable tourism practices that benefit both visitors and local communities.

Looking ahead, Kiribati aims to leverage its cultural heritage and natural beauty to attract more tourists. By investing in infrastructure improvements and promoting responsible tourism, the country can ensure a positive impact on its economy and environment. The continued support from SPTO and other stakeholders will be essential in achieving these goals and enhancing Kiribati’s appeal as a unique and desirable destination.
