Luxury Meets Sustainability: Travel Industry Leaders Experience Sal Salis Ahead of Global Summit

Sal Salis, one of Australia’s most luxurious eco-lodges, recently played host to some of the travel industry’s most influential leaders. Organized by Journey Beyond, in collaboration with Tourism Western Australia and Southern Crossings, the exclusive event immersed attendees in the natural beauty of Ningaloo Marine Park and the surrounding wilderness.

A Journey Through Western Australia’s Best Destinations

The trip began in Margaret River, where participants explored the Cape to Cape Walk and enjoyed the comforts of Smiths Beach Resort in Yallingup, renowned for its luxury accommodation. Culinary delights awaited them with an exclusive dining experience curated by chef Kate Lamont, setting the tone for an experience that perfectly blended luxury and nature.

The highlight of the famil was the visit to Sal Salis, nestled within the breathtaking UNESCO-listed Cape Range National Park. Here, where the outback meets the reef, the guests were treated to a stay in one of Australia’s Luxury Lodges, combining sustainable tourism practices with 5-star comforts.

Travel Leaders Dive into Ningaloo’s Wonders

Sal Salis offered the group not only a luxury retreat but also the chance to immerse themselves in the vibrant marine ecosystem of the Ningaloo Coast. Guests snorkeled through turquoise waters, swam alongside whale sharks, and explored the Cape Range National Park. This unique marine park, the only place in Western Australia where visitors can swim with both whale sharks and humpback whales, left an indelible mark on attendees.

The group included travel executives from global powerhouses, such as:

  • Matthew Upchurch, Founder and CEO, Virtuoso Travel
  • David Kolner, EVP, Virtuoso Travel
  • Jennifer Wilson-Buttigieg, Head of Travel Policy, Chase Travel
  • Andrea Grisdale, CEO, IC Bellagio
  • James Thornton, CEO, Intrepid Travel
  • Melissa Krueger, CEO, Classic Vacations

Alicia Triggs, executive general manager at Journey Beyond, expressed the significance of hosting this group at Sal Salis:

“It was an absolute privilege to welcome these global leaders to this extraordinary place, where luxury and sustainability go hand-in-hand. Sal Salis allows guests to make the most of their time while minimizing their impact.”

Sustainability at the Heart of Luxury

Sal Salis offers 16 eco-luxury safari tents located just meters from the largest fringing reef in the world. These tents are designed for minimal environmental impact, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in nature without compromising on comfort. Guests were able to unwind beneath the region’s starry skies and enjoy sunrise and sunset views over the ocean.

Travel leaders found the remote beauty of Sal Salis perfect for recharging and reconnecting with nature. Jennifer Wilson-Buttigieg of Chase Travel reflected on the experience:

“Sal Salis is truly magical. The team is exceptional, looking after every detail. From swimming with whale sharks to slowing down under the starlit sky, it’s a place I can’t wait to return to.”

Leading the Conversation on Sustainability

The event served as a prelude to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) Summit, underscoring the need for resilient, inclusive, and sustainable tourism futures. At the summit, discussions centered on balancing tourism growth with environmental preservation, aligning with the philosophy embodied by Sal Salis.

After the Sal Salis experience, Cory Gale, director of public relations at Tourism Western Australia, welcomed a second group of influential travel media at the summit. This group included:

  • Katherine LaGrave, Deputy Editor, AFAR Magazine
  • Noemi Penna, Journalist, La Stampa
  • Christopher Cameron, Travel Editor, New York Post
  • Elizabeth Frainier, Associate Travel Editor, The Times

These prominent media figures explored Western Australia’s tourism offerings, gaining insight into the region’s commitment to sustainable travel practices.
