Abbotsford’s Free Stream Still Feeds Vancouver’s Pipeline

On Oct. 20 the AHL put the Abbotsford Canucks back on FloHockey’s free YouTube slate, the same window that once gave away a home opener against San Diego. That Oct. 25, 2024 game ended 3-1 and put Manny Malhotra’s farm club on any phone.

The listing still reads as a league gift. The people on that first stream now work in Vancouver, and the parent club is 2-7-1.

FloHockey Put Abbotsford vs San Diego on YouTube for Free

Patrick Williams previewed the matchup for FloHockey on Oct. 25, 2024, as a Pacific Division Game of the Week at 10 p.m. ET. San Diego was in town for a two-game set. Abbotsford was opening the home slate after four road games and a 2-1-0-1 start.

The same live feed that paid users got on FloHockey.tv went out on YouTube, Facebook, and X. That was the deal Chris Peters had spelled out two weeks earlier, when the league promised a free Game of the Week on YouTube every Saturday of the regular season, with Facebook copies on the AHL page and on both clubs’ pages.

The first giveaway of that 2024-25 season had already been Hershey against Cleveland on Oct. 12, 2024, at 7 p.m. ET, bundled with a Calder Cup banner raising at 6:40. Abbotsford’s turn came on a late Pacific puck drop, the kind of start time that only travels if someone else pays the freight.

FloHockey’s event stamp for the stream is 2:00 a.m. UTC on Oct. 26, which is 10 p.m. ET on Oct. 25. Abbotsford won 3-1. The clubs split the set the next night, 4-1 to San Diego, with Chase Wouters scoring on a penalty shot.

The Stream Was Built for Vancouver’s Farm System

Williams did not sell a random AHL date. He sold Vancouver’s list. Jonathan Lekkerimäki, the 15th pick in 2022 and the SHL rookie of the year after 19-12-31 in 46 games with Örebro, had missed the opening weeks with an illness and was skating again. Aatu Räty had 18-34-52 in 72 games the season before, then three NHL games and one assist before the demotion. Defenseman Elias Pettersson, not the forward, had two assists in four AHL games.

Malhotra was the other name. He had just taken the Abbotsford job on May 27, 2024, after four seasons as a Toronto Maple Leafs assistant, and the preview treated his first home game as the show.

FloHockey still writes the product that way. A Sept. 28, 2026 guide told Canucks fans they could watch Vancouver Canucks prospects all season with Abbotsford and the ECHL’s Kalamazoo Wings, and it named Braeden Cootes, Lekkerimäki, and Sawyer Mynio before a single standings graphic.

THE OCT. 2024 WINDOW, TWO YEARS ON

The AHL Game of the Week label makes it sound like a league sampler. The names on the graphic were always a Canucks broadcast with extra ice.

Lekkerimäki’s Point Shot and a 3-1 Home Opener

He did play. Abbotsford’s own recap of the home opener has Yegor Sidorov scoring at 2:57 from Judd Caulfield, Danila Klimovich tying it on the power play at 9:22, then Lekkerimäki walking into a point shot that Räty tipped for 2-1. Mark Friedman finished it at 11:28 of the second after a Ty Mueller steal. San Diego’s account matches the 3-1 and credits Calle Clang with 35 saves on 38 shots.

Matt McIlvane, then in his second season as Gulls coach, did not dress it up.

Ryan Carpenter, the veteran Anaheim had added for that overhaul, called the effort unacceptable. The Gulls had missed the playoffs two years running. Six of their top eight scorers from the prior season were gone. They still took the next night 4-1.

The free stream did not need a sweep. It needed Lekkerimäki in the shot, Räty at the net, and Malhotra behind the bench, which is what Vancouver fans came to see. A later pairing of the same clubs went up as a free YouTube live on Nov. 15, 2025, and that replay still sits at 4.5 thousand views after 2 hours 43 minutes. The giveaway scales with how close the farm sits to the NHL.

What a Saturday Giveaway Costs on FloHockey

The AHL and FloSports announced a every regular-season and Calder Cup game package on Sept. 12, 2024, moving AHLTV onto FloHockey with new encoders in every building and 60-frames-a-second feeds. Subscribers also got more than 21,000 other hockey events on the same login. Scott Howson, the AHL’s president and CEO, called it an extension of a web and stats relationship that already ran TheAHL.com (since 2009) and LeagueStat (since 2005).

Josh Siskin, then FloHockey’s GM, said the move would grow the AHL’s footprint and lock FloHockey in as the home for the NHL’s development system. Nearly 90 percent of NHL players have come through the AHL. The price printed in that release was $29.99 USD a month ($39.99 CAD), or $150 USD a year ($203.88 CAD), a 58 percent cut from paying month to month. FloHockey also listed 1,152 regular-season AHL games in that first season on the new stack.

WHERE THE PUCK IS FREE, AND WHERE IT IS NOT

The free game is the same production as the paid one. That is the point. You sample the encoder, then you are asked to buy the other 1,151 dates. When FloHockey’s network went down on Feb. 7, 2026, Abbotsford did not wait on a fix. The club posted a YouTube live for that night’s game against San Jose and told fans to use it. Free is the backup generator. It is also the commercial.

The model is spreading. FloHockey and YouTube added a 22-game OHL Saturday package for 2026-27, on top of 26 Friday Night Faceoff broadcasts, 48 scheduled free junior games in one league. The AHL version is older, thinner, and aimed at a different buyer: NHL fans who will not pay $150 to peek at a farmhand.

The league said so on Oct. 20, 2026, in as many words.

THE FOUR CLUBS ON THE OCT. 20 SLATE

• Abbotsford Canucks: Vancouver’s AHL club, now at Rogers Forum, in a homestand that continues Oct. 24 and Oct. 25 against Calgary.
• Calgary Wranglers: The Flames’ farm team, listed beside Abbotsford, which is how the AHL usually flags a series it wants on the free channels.
• Syracuse Crunch: Tampa Bay’s affiliate, an Eastern date on the same 24/7 and YouTube pass.
• Laval Rocket: Montreal’s affiliate, the other Eastern club named in the post.

The AHL did not print a puck-drop or a single-game graphic in that post. It named the four teams and the two channels. Abbotsford hosts the Wranglers on Oct. 24 at 5 p.m. PT and Oct. 25 at 3 p.m. PT, the third and fourth meetings of a 12-game season series, after dropping both openers in Calgary 4-2 on Oct. 2 and Oct. 3. If you are a Vancouver fan, that is the date you actually wanted from “double the freeview.”

Six Goals in One Period at Rogers Forum

The building is no longer called Abbotsford Centre. Rogers Forum, 7,046 seats on King Road, took the name in November 2025. The 2024 Gulls stream went out from the old one. The 2026 club opened the new name against Coachella Valley.

Abbotsford is 3-2-1 with 7 points in 6 games. The first four were on the road: two losses in Calgary, a shootout loss in Colorado, then a 4-3 win there on Oct. 10. The home opener on Oct. 17 was 7-3. The club posted that six goals in the second period were a franchise record. Sunday, Oct. 18, went 5-4 in a shootout. That is 12-7 on the weekend against a Coachella Valley team that still got a point.

ABBOTSFORD AFTER 6 GAMES

• Record: 3-2-1, 7 points, out of a four-game homestand that still has Calgary on Oct. 24 and Oct. 25.
• Home weekend: 7-3 on Oct. 17, 5-4 in a shootout on Oct. 18, 12-7 in goals.
• Franchise note: Six goals in one period, posted by the club after the opener.
• Schedule shape: 64 of 72 games are inside the Pacific Division.

Richard Seeley is the new farm GM, named June 11, 2026, after Ryan Johnson took Vancouver’s NHL job. Malhotra’s staff in Abbotsford is gone with him. The product on the free feed is still the same job: show the kids, keep the Pacific late slot alive, and hope a Canucks fan stays through the next intermission.

Malhotra’s NHL Club Has 5 Points in 10 Games

Johnson hired as coach of the Vancouver Canucks on June 1, 2026, making Malhotra the 23rd head coach in franchise history. Adam Foote had been fired May 19 after a 25-49-8 season, last in the league. Johnson had hired Malhotra in Abbotsford in 2024. They went 44-24-2-2 and 92 points in year one, then 16-8 in the playoffs for the franchise’s first Calder Cup. Year two was 28-37-4-3 and no playoffs. The two-year line is 72-61-6-5.

Johnson said the hard year, not the Cup, was the test he wanted for a rebuild.

After winning a championship, was that when the ‘a-ha’ moment was? No, it was moments throughout this past season that we navigated injuries and adversity and never really saw a team together.

Malhotra is 46. He played 991 NHL games, 116 goals, 179 assists, 295 points, including 159 games with Vancouver from 2010 to 2013. Lekkerimäki is already on the NHL sheet: 10 games, 6 points, 13 shots, 14:04 a night. The parent club has 30 goals for and 45 against. Structure in three zones is the standard Johnson said he will use. The 8 a.m. skate, he said, will matter more than Friday night for a while.

That is Malhotra’s path from that free-stream bench in one jump: the Saturday YouTube window, the Calder, the ugly 28-win year, then the NHL job. The feed did not create the hire. It did make the farm club a national tape for two seasons before Johnson moved him.

Abbotsford hosts Calgary at Rogers Forum on Oct. 24 at 5 p.m. PT and Oct. 25 at 3 p.m. PT, and the AHL has already put both clubs on the free 24/7 and YouTube list for the week. The 2024 Gulls night was the template. The 2026 dates are the same product with new names on the glass.
