On October 21, 2024, food prices in Indonesia continued to climb, with a noticeable rise in several essential commodities. The National Food Agency (Bapanas) reported significant price hikes, particularly for shallots, which jumped by 1.65% to Rp29,640 per kilogram, reflecting growing concerns among consumers and traders.
Rice and Other Staples Face Steady Price Increases
The price of rice, a staple in Indonesian households, also saw an uptick. Premium rice increased by 0.19%, now costing Rp15,500 per kilogram, while medium rice experienced a 0.52% rise to Rp13,600 per kilogram. Even the price of Bulog’s Stabilized Rice (SPHP) went up slightly, rising 0.08% to Rp12,570 per kilogram.
Several other key food items followed the upward trend:
- Garlic bulbs increased by 1.08% to Rp40,410 per kilogram.
- Curly red chilies climbed 1.04%, now priced at Rp31,160 per kilogram.
- Chicken eggs saw a significant rise of 1.65%, bringing the price to Rp28,490 per kilogram.
In contrast, red bird’s eye chilies provided some relief with a 1.43% drop, now priced at Rp44,050 per kilogram.
Meat, Poultry, and Fish Prices Also Surge
Fresh beef prices rose slightly, now at Rp135,030 per kilogram, while broiler chicken increased by 0.53%, costing Rp36,110 per kilogram. Meanwhile, mackerel prices jumped 1.74% to Rp37,960 per kilogram, and tuna prices rose to Rp31,540 per kilogram.
Despite the overall rise in prices, milkfish saw a 1.35% decrease, now priced at Rp32,810 per kilogram.
Corn and Other Agricultural Commodities Impact Farmers
Among agricultural commodities, corn witnessed the steepest rise, jumping 3.51% to Rp6,200 per kilogram. This increase is expected to affect livestock farmers, as corn is a primary ingredient in animal feed.
Additionally, packaged cooking oil saw a price increase of 0.99% to Rp18,410 per kilogram, while bulk cooking oil provided slight relief with a 0.85% price decrease, now costing Rp16,410 per kilogram.
