On World Tourism Day 2024, the Ministry of Tourism (MoT) in India is set to unveil a series of forward-looking initiatives aimed at revitalizing the country’s tourism sector. These initiatives are designed to enhance both domestic and international tourism, with a strong emphasis on collaboration, innovation, and skill-building. Revamped Incredible India Portal
One of the most significant announcements is the launch of the revamped Incredible India portal. This comprehensive platform is designed to simplify travel planning and provide extensive resources for tourists and the travel trade. The portal features over 4,500 photos, films, and informational resources available for free download, offering unprecedented access to rich content that supports itinerary planning and destination experiences.
The new portal also includes user-generated travel diaries, which provide authentic testimonials and itinerary suggestions. This feature aims to create a more engaging and interactive experience for users, allowing them to share their travel stories and inspire others. The Director General of Tourism, Mugdha Sinha, described the portal as “the grand dame of aggregators,” emphasizing its role in simplifying the booking process and enhancing the overall travel experience.
Additionally, the portal’s enhanced functionality is expected to boost India’s appeal as a travel destination, attracting more international tourists and supporting the growth of the tourism industry. By providing a centralized platform for travel information, the MoT aims to make India more accessible and appealing to travelers worldwide.
Capacity-Building in the Hospitality Sector
The MoT has also turned its attention to capacity-building in the hospitality sector, a vital component of India’s tourism infrastructure. A key initiative involves the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between 57 Institutes of Hotel Management (IHMs) and international hotel chains, including IHG, Radisson, Marriott, The Lalit, and Lemon Tree. These partnerships will co-brand the IHMs and introduce a globally benchmarked curriculum, giving students exposure to world-class hospitality standards.
This move aims to produce a highly skilled workforce capable of meeting global tourism demands. By aligning the curriculum with international standards, the MoT seeks to enhance the quality of hospitality education in India and ensure that graduates are well-prepared for careers in the global tourism industry. The initiative also reflects a broader goal of strengthening India’s hospitality sector and supporting its growth.
Furthermore, the MoT has expanded its capacity-building pilot program, initially launched in six key destinations, to 50 locations across India. This initiative focuses on bringing the Atithi Devo Bhava ethos into practice across more regions, promoting a culture of hospitality and excellence in service. By scaling this program, the MoT aims to enhance the overall quality of tourism services and create a more welcoming environment for visitors.
Promoting Rural and Responsible Tourism
Rural and responsible tourism are other areas receiving considerable attention from the MoT. The Ministry will announce the winners in eight categories under the Rural Tourism initiative, recognizing efforts to promote sustainable and community-led tourism. These initiatives aim to create opportunities for local communities to participate in and benefit from tourism-related activities, fostering inclusive growth and development.
The MoT is also launching the Responsible Traveller campaign, which aims to create awareness about the do’s and don’ts while traveling. This campaign is part of a broader effort to promote sustainable tourism practices and encourage travelers to minimize their environmental impact. By educating tourists about responsible behavior, the MoT hopes to preserve India’s natural and cultural heritage for future generations.
Additionally, the MoT will unveil the national strategy for sustainable tourism and the revised Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme. These initiatives are designed to promote sustainable tourism development and enhance the visitor experience.
