What this site is, and what it is not

AN TV NEWS publishes journalism for general information. We report what happened, who said it, and where the document came from. Nobody reads a disclaimer for pleasure and we have not tried to make this one enjoyable, but the distinction it draws is one our readers act on, so it is worth setting out properly.

Nothing here is professional advice. A story about a court ruling is not legal advice about your case. A story about a new regulation is not guidance about your file, your business or your status. Coverage of a health scare is not a diagnosis, and a market report is not a recommendation to buy or sell. We are a newsroom, not your lawyer, your doctor or your broker.

News changes, sometimes by the minute

The single most important thing to understand about a breaking story is that it is not finished. Early figures get revised. An official statement is clarified an hour later. An arrest is reported, then a name is corrected. A result is called, then the call is walked back. What is accurate at the moment we publish can be overtaken by the next update, and we would rather show you the story as it develops than wait a day and pretend to certainty we did not have.

So treat a fresh story as provisional until it settles. We mark our updates and label our corrections, which our corrections policy describes, and we test claims before publishing them, which our fact-checking policy covers. But no process removes the basic truth that news is the first rough account of something still happening.

Markets, money and health, in particular

Two areas deserve their own warning because readers are most tempted to act on them.

  • Business and markets. Prices, earnings, deals and forecasts are reported as news, not as investment advice. We do not tell you to buy, sell or hold anything, we hold no view on what you should do with your money, and past performance in any story is not a promise about the future. Before you act on money, talk to someone qualified and regulated to advise you.
  • Health and science. A study, an approval, an outbreak or an advisory is reported for what it is, often with the caution that a single finding is not settled science. Nothing here is a substitute for a professional who knows your situation. Do not start, stop or change a treatment because of a headline. Speak to a clinician.

The same caution applies, in its own key, to legal, tax, immigration and safety matters. We report the rule. We cannot apply it to you.

Links, embeds and material we did not make

Our stories link out to sources and other coverage, and our pages sometimes carry embedded video, social posts, maps or advertising served by third parties. We do not control those sites or that content, a link is not an endorsement, and once you leave AN TV NEWS you are on someone else’s terms. If something embedded here is broken or objectionable, tell us and we will look.

Advertising is labelled and kept separate from journalism. An advertisement or a clearly marked sponsored item reflects the advertiser, not our editorial judgement, and it is not a recommendation from us. How that separation works is on our advertise page.

Accuracy, effort and its limits

We aim to be right, and we spend most of our effort trying to be. We still will not always succeed, because we work at speed from sources that are themselves sometimes wrong. We do not warrant that every item is complete, current or free of error, and to the extent the law allows we are not liable for a decision you take in reliance on something you read here. The full statement of that limit is in our terms of service.

The honest bargain is this: we will correct in the open and keep trying to earn your trust, and you will treat a fast-moving story as the provisional thing it is. If you spot an error, do not stew over it, tell us. Write to support@antv.news, and other routes are on our contact page.
