Malaysia Previewed the Bao 5, Then Got the B8

BYD told a China press tour on 26 August 2024 that the Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5 was “under consideration” for Malaysia, after showing the left-hand-drive SUV here that May. The same off-roader is now on sale as the Denza B5 in Singapore, the Philippines, Australia and several other export markets, and Malaysia still has no local price for it.

The Fang Cheng Bao that did reach Malaysian showrooms is the larger Denza B8, launched on 21 May 2026 from RM458,800. That is the twist the 2024 teaser did not advertise.

Malaysia Saw the Bao 5 Long Before Neighbours Bought It

The SUV first appeared in the region at the Bangkok International Motor Show in April 2024, then made its first Malaysia Autoshow display in May, still with the steering wheel on the left. Brand staff on the August China tour said a right-hand-drive version had not been built yet and gave no conversion date.

On 29 May 2024, BYD Company Limited filed the Denza B5 name with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia. The filing sat alongside the show car as a clear export hint: if the off-roader left China, it would not wear the Fang Cheng Bao badge that Malaysian visitors saw on the stand.

THE TWO-YEAR CLOCK

1. November 2023: Fang Cheng Bao puts the Bao 5 on sale in China, the first model from BYD’s off-road sub-brand.
2. April 2024: The SUV appears at Bangkok, then in May at the Malaysia Autoshow in left-hand drive.
3. 29 May 2024: BYD files Denza B5 as a Malaysian trademark.
4. 26 August 2024: Brand representatives say the plug-in hybrid is “under consideration” for Malaysia.
5. 20 February 2025: Denza arrives here with the D9 electric MPV at RM259,000 and RM309,000, and stays quiet on Fang Cheng Bao.
6. February 2026: Australia and New Zealand start Denza B5 deliveries; Singapore follows on 19 March and the Philippines in April.
7. 21 May 2026: Denza Malaysia launches the larger B8. GWM launches the Tank 300 HEV the same day.

China still buys the car as a Fang Cheng Bao. Yiche retail tallies put 4,888 units in 2023, 45,989 in 2024 and 51,887 in 2025. Export markets from late 2025 onward sell the same ladder-frame recipe as a Denza.

BYD Sends the Bao 5 Abroad as a Denza

Fang Cheng Bao, Denza and Yangwang are BYD’s three premium houses in China. Only Denza was built as the global luxury channel, which is why a Malaysia show car badged Bao 5 is a Denza B5 in Sydney and a DENZA BAO 5 in Europe. The hardware is the Dual Mode Off-road plug-in hybrid: a ladder frame, a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine mounted lengthways, and electric motors at both axles.

China-spec Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5 specifications quote 687 PS (677 hp, 505 kW) and 760 Nm, with 4.8 seconds to 100 km/h. The 1.5-litre engine makes 194 PS and 273 Nm. A 272 PS front motor and a 387 PS rear motor do the rest, fed by a 31.8 kWh Blade LFP pack good for 125 km on the CLTC cycle. DC charging is rated at 100 kW, or 30 to 80 percent in 16 minutes, and vehicle-to-load output is 6 kW. The body measures 4,890 mm long, 1,970 mm wide and 1,920 mm tall on a 2,800 mm wheelbase.

Export cars are milder. Denza’s Australian sheet lists 400 kW. Singapore quotes 425 kW and 570 hp. Europe’s figure is 544 PS, still with 760 Nm and a 4.8-second claim in Elegance trim. Electric range on WLTP-style tests is 90 km from the same 31.8 kWh pack, not the 125 km CLTC number from China. In October 2025 China also gained a 47.8 kWh long-range pack rated at 210 km CLTC; that battery is a home-market extra, not the export default.

The European debut of the BAO 5 was at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on 9 July 2026. BYD said European stores would take orders during the summer, with first deliveries in the final quarter of 2026. Ultimate trim is 4,921 mm long, rides on DiSus-P hydraulic suspension that can raise ground clearance to 310 mm, and uses an 18-speaker Devialet audio set. Combined WLTP range is 835 km. The cabin keeps the triple-screen layout that was on the 2024 Kuala Lumpur stand: a 12.3-inch cluster, a 15.6-inch centre screen and a passenger display, plus a head-up unit.

What the Denza B5 Sells for Abroad

Where the car already has a sticker, it sits in Prado and Defender money, not in the RM177,000 to RM215,000 band that China’s 2024 yuan prices (289,900 to 352,800 yuan) once suggested for Malaysia. Singapore’s launch price is S$368,888 with COE, the local ownership permit folded into the figure, with an early-bird cut of S$20,000 to S$348,888. Australia opened at A$74,990 plus on-roads for the base B5 and A$79,990 for the Leopard, which adds DiSus-P. Industry registration counts put 2026 Australian volume at 1,556 units. The United Arab Emirates took the model in November 2025, Brazil in December 2025, and New Zealand with Australia in February 2026.

DENZA B5 STICKERS WHERE IT IS ON SALE

The Australian Denza B5 specification sheet also lists 3,000 kg braked towing and a 31.8 kWh pack. ANCAP has published an ANCAP score sheet for the Denza B5 with 86 percent for adult occupants, 95 percent for children, 74 percent for pedestrians and 78 percent for safety assist. Those figures travel with the export car. They do not, by themselves, put a ringgit price on a Malaysian order form.

GWM Parked a Hybrid at RM259,800

The 2024 teaser already named the rival: the GWM Tank 300, which had gone on sale here in July 2024 as a 2.0-litre petrol off-roader at RM250,000. On 21 May 2026, GWM added the Tank 300 HEV at RM259,800 on the road without insurance, RM9,800 above the petrol truck. Combined output is 346 hp and 648 Nm. The century run takes 8.1 seconds. At the HEV launch, GWM put the petrol Tank 300’s local owner base above 1,000.

That is the mid-price boxy-hybrid slot the Bao 5 would have walked into if BYD had brought the smaller SUV at anything like its old China money. The Tank 300 HEV is a non-plug-in hybrid with a 1.67 kWh pack, so it is not the same kind of electrified truck, but it is the one you can order this year with low-range gearing and a tank-turn function. A Denza B5, had it landed near RM200,000, would have doubled the Tank’s power and added a plug. It did not land there.

THREE OFF-ROAD HYBRIDS, ONE EMPTY SEAT

The empty seat is the one Malaysian visitors kicked in 2024. GWM filled the cheaper side of that seat with a hybrid that still uses a small battery. Denza filled the expensive side with a three-row flagship. The five-seat plug-in that sat on the Autoshow carpet is the missing middle.

The B8 Is the Fang Cheng Bao Malaysia Got

Denza Malaysia opened registrations of interest for the B8 in April 2026 and launched it on 21 May 2026, the same day as the Tank 300 HEV. The B8 is the export name for Fang Cheng Bao’s Bao 8, a longer three-row body-on-frame plug-in with a 2.0-litre turbo and two motors. Dynamic seven-seat cars start at RM458,800. Premium six-seat cars are RM518,800. The pack is 36.8 kWh, with 100 km of WLTP electric range and 905 km combined. System output is 578 PS and 760 Nm, and the sprint claim is again 4.8 seconds.

Official BYD Malaysia called the B8 the country’s first Dual Mode Off-road Super Hybrid from the group. That wording matters. It frames the larger SUV, not the Bao 5, as the DMO product Malaysia was waiting for.

WHO HAS THE FIVE-SEAT CAR, AND WHO HAS THE EIGHT

• Denza B5 on sale: Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, the Philippines, the United Arab Emirates and Brazil, with European orders open for late-2026 delivery.
• Denza B8 on sale in Malaysia: From RM458,800 as of 21 May 2026, as the brand’s second local model after the D9.
• Bao 5 in Malaysia: Shown in 2024, trademarked as Denza B5, still without a launch date or a ringgit price.

A five-seat Denza B5 would have sat under the B8 and above the Tank 300 HEV on paper. Instead the local Denza off-road ladder starts at nearly RM460,000. That is a different customer from the one who stood at the 2024 Autoshow stand and asked when the leopard-badged five-seater would get a right-hand-drive dashboard.

Plug-in Duty and a Cancelled Plant Change the Maths

Right-hand drive was the delay BYD named in August 2024. That delay is gone. Singapore and Australia already take RHD Denza B5s. The live constraints are tax, brand mix and factory plans. Malaysia’s special exemption for imported battery EVs ended on 31 December 2025. From 1 July 2026, fully built EV imports need a minimum CIF value of RM200,000 and at least 180 kW. A plug-in hybrid was never in the same incentive bucket as a pure EV, which is why a CBU Bao 5 was always likely to land as a luxury object rather than as a tax-cut Atto 3 rival.

BYD Malaysia managing director Jacob Ma said on 10 September 2026 that the Tanjung Malim assembly plant will not proceed. He said talks with an established local partner for contract assembly were at a late stage. Until those cars are knocked down here, every Denza off-roader is an import, and the import bill is what pushed the B8 into the RM458,800 band. A B5 brought in the same way would not recreate the RM177,000 China-to-ringgit conversion from 2024.

WHAT WE KNOW

• The export name: Outside China the Bao 5 is the Denza B5, and RHD cars are already in customer hands in Australia and Singapore.
• The Malaysia range: Denza sells the D9 MPV and the B8 SUV here; the B5 is not on the local price list.
• The rival in the gap: The Tank 300 HEV is RM259,800, on sale since 21 May 2026.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

• A B5 on-sale date: BYD has not named a Malaysian launch window for the five-seat SUV.
• A local sticker: No official ringgit price exists, so any comparison with RM177,000 China money is historical, not a forecast.
• CKD inclusion: Ma’s new assembly partner has not been named, and the B5 has not been listed as a knock-down candidate.

BYD has not named a Malaysia on-sale date for the Bao 5. The SUV that sat on the Autoshow stand is already a Denza in Singapore; the one with a Malaysian invoice is the B8.
